How to Write a Complelling Case Study

Case studies essentially study specific subjects extensively to establish patterns or origins of behaviour. Writing case studies can be pretty challenging or demanding for most people

Case study format.

Case studies are primarily used to examine specific cases to offer tangible solutions. They are indispensable tools in corporate promotions and academic research. In addition, they often contain a lot of information, hence the need for clear formatting. Underneath is a brief breakdown of the universally used case study format.

  1. Executive summary.

The executive summary summarizes the topic being researched. It contains a thesis statement and a summary of the study’s outcomes. A good executive summary should also state the purpose of the case study succinctly.

  1. Background.

The background section essentially provides context or background information pertaining to the case in question. For instance, in a medical case study, you can extensively expound on the patient’s ailing and treatment history.

  1. Case evaluation.

In case evaluation, you basically outline the chief pieces of your case study. You are then required to analyze each piece systematically to establish what is feasible and what is not.

  1. Recommended solutions.

This section offers logical remedies to the problems raised during case evaluation. The proposed solutions can also be recommendations to improve the present state of subjects. The solutions must be backed up by testable evidence.

  1. Conclusion.

The conclusion section simply sums up the chief talking points from case evaluation and recommended solutions. A good case study conclusion lays emphasis on the severity of the undertaken case study.

  1. Recommendations.

Here, you are simply proposing a strategy or a way forward. Testable evidence in favour of your recommendation is needed to show why that is the best way forward.

  1. Implementation.

After comprehensively explaining your recommendation, you then outline and explain how the proposed strategy can be actualized.

  1. References.

Finally, you wrap up your case study by listing references that you have used to back up your case study. For academic research case studies, the referencing style used should be in adherence with the given instructions.

Types of case studies

Case studies are primarily used for academic research purposes and in different industries to provide further insights. The following are some of the most prominent types of case studies

  1. Descriptive case studies.

Descriptive case studies simply examine the patterns shared between a theory and a subject. They are primarily tasked with progressing a specific theory.

  1. Exploratory case studies.

Exploratory case studies are mainly used to justify the need for a more extensive case study. Simply put, they provide answers to questions revolving around ‘what’ or ‘who’.

  1. Intrinsic case studies.

Intrinsic case studies solely focus on the subject. They collect comprehensive data regarding the subject with the aim of furthering people’s understanding of the said subject.

  1. Explanatory case studies.

Explanatory case studies primarily aim to establish the cause/origin of an event, occurrence, or incident. They simply provide answers to questions revolving around ‘why’ and ‘how’.

  1. Collective case studies.

Collective case studies essentially examine a number of case studies with the aim of commencing a new case study. Multiple case studies are examined chronologically or simultaneously with the intention of beginning a new case study.

  1. Instrumental case studies.

Instrumental case studies study cases to get a better understanding of a specific phenomenon. An instrumental case study simply provides evidence, which is in turn used to explain the subject.
